The Boston Bruins are looking towards the 2025-2026 season with renewed hope, and a key part of their potential success lies in the development of their young forwards. Several players are vying for a breakout season, with Georgii Merkulov and Marat Khusnutdinov emerging as prime candidates to elevate their game and make a significant impact on the team.

Georgii Merkulov

Merkulov has shown flashes of brilliance, and the upcoming season could be his opportunity to solidify his role in the NHL. The 25-year-old Czech forward has demonstrated his offensive capabilities in the AHL, racking up impressive stats. In 67 games with Texas of the AHL last season, he tallied 39 goals and 33 assists for a total of 72 points. While he only has two goals in 13 NHL games, the Bruins, who are looking for offensive firepower, might give Blumel a real chance to jump into the lineup in 2025-26.

Marat Khusnutdinov

Khusnutdinov is another forward who could surprise many next season. His playmaking abilities and hockey sense make him a valuable asset. He has the potential to become a key contributor in the Bruins' offensive schemes.

Other potential breakout candidates for the Bruins include Fabian Lysell, Matt Poitras and Fraser Minten.

Fabian Lysell, a 2021 first-round pick, is entering a crucial phase of his career. At 22 years old, the Bruins are hoping he can transform into a legitimate NHL talent. He ended last season on a positive note, and maybe he will have a breakout campaign in 2025-26.

Matt Poitras is also a clear breakout candidate for the Bruins for next season. The 21-year-old has excelled since being sent down to the AHL. He had 17 goals and 41 points in 40 games with the Providence Bruins.

Fraser Minten, a 21-year-old center, is another player who could make an impact. After being acquired by the Bruins, he scored one goal in six games. Minten is known for his smart defensive play and offensive upside. With the Bruins' third-line center spot potentially open, Minten could make the jump to the NHL.

While these young players offer promise, the departure of Cole Koepke to the Winnipeg Jets highlights the challenges the Bruins face in maintaining their roster. Koepke, who had a breakout season with the Bruins in 2024-25, signed a one-year, $1 million contract with Winnipeg after setting career highs in goals, assists, and points.

The Bruins have also been active in making other changes to their roster and coaching staff. They recently hired Sturm and added forward depth after finishing last in the Atlantic Division. The Bruins also drafted James Hagens in the 2025 NHL Draft.
