The Indiana Hoosiers are generating significant buzz in the Big Ten power rankings, largely fueled by the surprising recognition of their new quarterback, Fernando Mendoza. Several analysts have placed Mendoza near the top of the Big Ten quarterback rankings, despite the fact that he hasn't yet played a single snap in the conference.
On3Sports college football analyst Andy Staples, for example, ranked Mendoza third among Big Ten quarterbacks heading into the 2025 season, only behind Drew Allar from Penn State and Luke Altmyer from Illinois. This is noteworthy considering Mendoza's status as a newcomer to the conference.
Mendoza's performance last season at California provides some insight into this high ranking. He threw for over 3,000 yards with a completion rate of nearly 69%, along with 16 touchdowns and only six interceptions. While these numbers aren't exceptional, his poise and decision-making skills have impressed many observers. He is known for his ability to quickly process information, make swift throws, and maintain composure under pressure. These attributes align perfectly with what Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti seeks in a quarterback.
Mendoza transferred to Indiana in December, and is expected to fill the shoes of the outgoing Kurtis Rourke. During his career with the Bobcats, Rourke completed 66.3% of his passes for 7,651 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. In 2022, Rourke was named Mid-American Offensive Player of the Year. PFF has stated that Rourke's 2022 season, in which they rated Rourke as the most accurate quarterback in all of college football, is the reason Indiana "could surprise a lot of Big Ten foes".
The Big Ten appears to be a conference in considerable transition at the quarterback position. Several teams, including Ohio State, Indiana, and Oregon, are introducing new starters.
Phil Steele released his preseason Big Ten rankings, which utilizes nine different power ranking methods. These rankings consider last year's results, strength of schedule, and plus/minus ratings. According to Phil Steele, the top 5 teams are: 1. Ohio State Buckeyes (128.19) 2. Penn State Nittany Lions (127.87) 3. Oregon Ducks (123.56) 4. Michigan Wolverines (122.92) 5. Indiana Hoosiers (118.62)
Given the perceived strength at the quarterback position, expectations are high for Indiana heading into the 2025 season.
