A prisoner on parole, Chandan Mishra, facing multiple murder charges, was attacked by a rival gang while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Patna on Thursday morning. The incident occurred at Paras Hospital, where unidentified assailants opened fire, injuring Mishra. Following the shooting, patients, attendants, doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff fled the scene.
Patna police are investigating the incident and coordinating with Buxar police to identify the members of the rival gang, believed to be the Chandan Sheru gang. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kartiekya Kumar, authorities have photographs of the shooters and a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has been dispatched to Paras Hospital to investigate the crime scene.
SSP Kartiekya Kumar stated that Chandan Mishra, a resident of Buxar district, had been transferred from Buxar to Bhagalpur jail. At the time of the attack, Mishra was on parole and admitted to Paras Hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound.
This shooting is the latest in a series of similar incidents in Bihar. The opposition has criticized the Nitish Kumar-led government, claiming a deterioration of law and order in the state. These incidents follow the recent killings of businessman and BJP leader Gopal Khemka, who was shot dead outside his Patna home earlier this month, and BJP leader Surendra Kewat who was killed in Sheikpura. Another individual, Vikram Jha, was also shot and killed in Patna's Ram Krishna Nagar area. Furthermore, a lawyer, Jitendra Mahato, was recently shot dead in Patna.
The recent increase in violent incidents has sparked political debate, particularly as Bihar prepares for upcoming assembly elections. Opposition leaders are using these events to criticize the current government's ability to maintain law and order. In response, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary claimed that there is no organized crime in the state, while acknowledging the difficulty in preventing murders arising from personal disputes.
