Ali Fazal, currently basking in the success of his latest film Metro… In Dino, has weighed in on the recent debate surrounding Deepika Padukone's reported request for an 8-hour workday while working on Spirit. The actor emphasized the importance of collaboration and compassion in the film industry, steering clear of taking sides in the ongoing discussion.

Metro... In Dino, directed by Anurag Basu, hit theaters on July 4, 2025, and is described as a spiritual sequel to Basu's 2007 film, Life in a... Metro. The film features an ensemble cast including Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Konkona Sen Sharma. The movie explores modern love and relationships in urban India through interconnected stories.

In a recent interview, Ali Fazal addressed the controversy sparked by reports that Deepika Padukone's demand for an 8-hour workday on the film Spirit led to her departure from the project. Fazal stated that filmmaking should not be treated like a typical corporate job. He emphasized that creative endeavors require compassion and understanding and that work hours should be mutually decided upon by actors, creators, and technicians.

Fazal explained that different genres and projects require varying work styles, making it difficult to apply a one-size-fits-all template. He noted that VFX-heavy projects might require less shooting time, while action and drama-oriented films often demand more. He believes that these decisions should be subjective and not subject to external opinions or pressure to take sides.

Deepika Padukone's exit from Spirit led to Triptii Dimri being cast in her place. Following her departure, Padukone joined Allu Arjun's film, tentatively titled AA22xA6, directed by Atlee. Reports suggested that Padukone's demands for Spirit included a hefty paycheck, a share in the profits, and a refusal to dub in Telugu.

Ali Fazal's perspective highlights the ongoing conversation within the film industry regarding work-life balance and the need for flexibility and understanding. His comments come amidst the positive reception of Metro… In Dino, where he plays a key role in portraying the complexities of modern relationships.

Metro... In Dino has received generally positive reviews, with praise for its ensemble performances, thematic depth, and Pritam's music. Some critics have pointed out issues with pacing and narrative cohesion. The film is slated to be released on Netflix in late August or early September 2025, following its theatrical run.
