Team India has suffered a significant setback in their ongoing Test series against England, with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy ruled out of the remaining matches. The 21-year-old sustained a left knee injury and will return home for rehabilitation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Monday. This news comes as India trails 2-1 in the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, adding pressure to the already intense series.
Reddy's absence is a blow to India's team composition, as he had shown promise as a seam-bowling all-rounder. He made his Test debut on the Australian tour last year. In the current series, he featured in the second and third Tests. While he had a quiet outing in Birmingham, he made a crucial impact at Lord's, dismissing both English openers, Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, in the same over during the first innings. He also dismissed Crawley again in the second innings. With the bat, he contributed scores of 30 and 13.
Adding to India's woes, uncapped left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has been ruled out of the fourth Test in Manchester. Singh sustained an impact injury to his left thumb during a training session in Beckenham. The BCCI medical team is currently monitoring his progress.
In light of these setbacks, the Men's Selection Committee has drafted Haryana pacer Anshul Kamboj into the squad. Kamboj has already joined the team in Manchester ahead of the fourth Test, which begins on Wednesday, July 23, at Old Trafford.
The absence of both Reddy and Singh further compounds India's existing concerns regarding workload management, particularly around pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah, who has played in just two of the three Tests so far, was initially slated to be available for only one of the remaining two Tests. However, with these recent injuries, the team management might be compelled to utilize his services in the crucial Manchester Test.
With Reddy ruled out, Shardul Thakur, who featured in the series opener in Leeds, could return to the playing XI if India opts to persist with a seam-bowling all-rounder. Thakur's performance in the first Test was somewhat underwhelming, with limited overs bowled and modest contributions with the bat. However, his experience could be valuable in the upcoming matches.
India's updated squad for the fourth Test includes Shubman Gill (C), Rishabh Pant (VC & WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Kuldeep Yadav, and Anshul Kamboj. As India prepares for the must-win fourth Test, the team will need to regroup and strategize to overcome these injury setbacks and level the series.
