Jagdeep Dhankhar's final day as Vice President of India and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha was marked by significant events, culminating in his resignation due to health concerns. His resignation, which came on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament, was effective immediately, as stated in his letter to President Droupadi Murmu.

Dhankhar cited medical advice as the primary reason for his decision to step down, invoking Article 67(a) of the Constitution. This article deals with the resignation of the Vice President. In his farewell note, he expressed his deep gratitude to President Murmu for her unwavering support and the wonderful working relationship they shared. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers, acknowledging their invaluable support and stating that he had learned immensely during his time in office. Dhankhar reflected on the warmth, trust, and affection he received from all the Honorable Members of Parliament, expressing that these would forever be cherished in his memory.

During his final address in the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar delivered a stirring reflection on democracy, governance, and the importance of upholding parliamentary conduct. He urged all parties to maintain the dignity of the Upper House and uphold constitutional values, making indirect references to recent legislative deadlocks and disruptions. Sources close to Dhankhar's office suggested that political pressure and ideological divergence may have also contributed to his decision to resign.

Dhankhar's tenure as Vice President, which began in 2022, was notable for his assertive style and frequent interactions with the Opposition. Before becoming Vice President, he served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022.

In his resignation letter, Dhankhar expressed pride in witnessing India's remarkable economic progress and transformative development. He acknowledged it as a privilege to have served during this pivotal period in India's history and conveyed his unwavering confidence in the nation's future.

Following Dhankhar's resignation, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson Harivansh Narayan Singh will serve as the Acting Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha until a new Vice President is elected. An election to fill the vice-presidential vacancy must be held within 60 days, conducted by all members of both Houses of Parliament through a proportional representation system using the single transferable vote.

Earlier in the year, Dhankhar had been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on March 9 due to cardiac-related ailments. He was discharged on March 12 after a satisfactory recovery.

Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation marks the end of a significant chapter in Indian politics, prompting discussions about the future of Indian governance and potential political realignments.
