In Patna, a group of five teenagers ventured into the Ganga river in the Alamganj area for a swim during the auspicious month of Sawan. Tragically, the strong currents of the river swept them away. Nearby people witnessed the incident and immediately raised an alarm. Quick to respond, SSB jawans stationed at the Ganga Ghat initiated a rescue operation.
The rescue team successfully saved three of the teenagers, who were then promptly transported to a hospital for medical treatment. However, the whereabouts of the remaining two teenagers are currently unknown. As of July 21, 2025, divers and rescue teams are actively searching for the missing teens.
This incident has cast a pall of shock and sorrow over the area. Authorities are urging the public to refrain from bathing in rivers during the monsoon season due to the high water levels and dangerous currents.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Earlier, on February 27, 2025, five youths drowned in the Ganga River at Collectorate Ghat in Patna. Six youths were playing volleyball on the bank of the river. Three others, who were bathing nearby, joined their game. During the game, one of them went for a bath in the Ganga river and started drowning. The six others rushed to save him, but all were swept away by the current. A boatman managed to save two of them. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) recovered three bodies, and search operations are underway for the remaining two.
In another incident, back in October 2023, five teenagers, aged 15 and 16, drowned in the Ganga in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Two others were rescued by local swimmers. According to authorities, one of the teenagers lost his balance while swimming and started drowning. In a panic, the others tried to save him, but they, too, drowned.
These unfortunate events highlight the dangers of swimming in the Ganga River, especially during periods of strong currents or high water levels. Authorities often issue warnings and deploy जल police personnel, but these measures are not always enough to prevent tragedies. Citizens are advised to exercise extreme caution and adhere to safety guidelines while engaging in water activities.
