Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York in September 2025. The UNGA's 80th session is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. The high-level General Debate, a key part of the session, will commence on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

While the official list of speakers suggests Modi will address the assembly on September 26, it is important to note that leaders can later nominate someone else to speak on their behalf. The schedule is also subject to change. In the past, even when Modi was initially slated to speak, the plans have been altered, with the External Affairs Minister delivering the address instead.

The UNGA is the main policy-making body of the United Nations, offering a platform for all 193 member states to discuss global issues. It allows for the establishment of international policies and the promotion of collaborative solutions. The UNGA session in September is a critical time for world leaders to address pressing issues. Key topics expected to be discussed at the UNGA 80 include climate change, sustainable development, international peace and security, human rights, and global health. Emerging issues such as the ethical implications of artificial intelligence and nuclear disarmament efforts are also likely to be discussed.

If Prime Minister Modi attends, his address is expected to reflect India's foreign policy and its contributions to global issues. His participation would highlight India's proactive role in global diplomacy and its commitment to a stable and equitable international order.

Beyond the UNGA address, Modi's potential visit to the U.S. in September could include other significant engagements. These may include addressing a major community event in New York. In previous visits, Modi has used these events to connect with the Indian diaspora, celebrate their progress, and reinforce ties with India. These events often emphasize the shared values between India and the U.S., such as viewing the world as one family and promoting the well-being of all. Interactions with CEOs of leading U.S.-based companies are also a possibility, fostering collaboration in areas like AI, quantum computing, and biotechnology. Bilateral meetings with other world leaders are also anticipated on the sidelines of the UNGA session.
