The political climate in Telangana has intensified as K. Chandrashekar Rao's (KCR) Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party has launched accusations against Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, alleging illegal phone surveillance. The accusations have sparked a heated debate, raising concerns about privacy and abuse of power within the state.
BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy made the accusations during a press conference, claiming that Revanth Reddy orchestrated widespread illegal phone surveillance, targeting prominent BRS leaders, including former Chief Minister KCR.
These accusations follow earlier reports and arrests related to phone tapping during the previous BRS regime. In March 2024, several police officials were arrested in connection with a phone-tapping case and destruction of computer systems and official data. The arrested officers allegedly confessed to unlawful surveillance, including profiling private individuals.
Adding to the complexity of the situation, businessman Gadhagoni Chakradhar Goud filed a complaint in December 2024, alleging illegal surveillance of his phone by BRS MLA T. Harish Rao and his associates. Goud claimed that Harish Rao misused state intelligence to monitor his movements and those of his friends and family, leading to threatening calls warning people not to attend his events.
In February 2025, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of shielding KCR and KT Rama Rao in the phone-tapping case. Reddy questioned why the BJP-led Union government did not act on the Telangana government's request to issue a Red Corner Notice for accused individuals who had fled to the United States. He also alleged a secret deal between the BJP and BRS.
The current accusations from the BRS party and the prior phone tapping allegations have created a politically charged environment in Telangana.
