Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has recently lauded India as the island nation's "closest and most trusted partner," signaling a notable shift in tone after previously expressing critical views regarding India's presence in the Maldives. This declaration came during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to the Maldives, where both leaders engaged in bilateral talks and issued a joint statement emphasizing the importance of strengthening ties between the two countries.

Muizzu, who once played a significant role in the "India Out" campaign, expressed gratitude to PM Modi and the Indian government for their continued support, acknowledging India's role as the first responder whenever the Maldives faces any challenges. This sentiment marks a dramatic improvement in India-Maldives relations, especially after some unease and tension in the recent past.

During a state banquet held in honor of Prime Minister Modi, Muizzu highlighted the deep-rooted connections between the Maldives and India that extend beyond formal diplomacy, tracing back centuries. He emphasized that the shared journey of both nations as traders and neighbors has forged a resilient and unbreakable bond, with the Indian Ocean serving as a living testament to these long-standing ties.

President Muizzu affirmed his government's commitment to building an inclusive and dynamic economy, empowering young people, and ensuring peace and security in the region, recognizing India's partnership as instrumental in realizing these ambitions. He expressed his hope for a flourishing Maldives-India partnership that brings lasting peace and prosperity to both nations.

Prime Minister Modi, on his first official visit to the Maldives since winning a third term, stressed that India will remain the "first responder" for the country and will continue to support the Maldives in strengthening its defense capabilities. He emphasized that peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region are shared goals.

Modi announced a $565 million credit line to boost infrastructure in the Maldives and launched free trade talks, aiming to strengthen India's development partnership with the archipelago. The credit line will be used to bolster the Maldives' security forces and improve healthcare, housing, and education.

The two leaders held extensive talks, focusing on deepening bilateral cooperation in trade, defense, and maritime security. They also discussed ways to expand the vital tourism sector through enhanced cooperation and connectivity, including the commencement of direct flights. Furthermore, they explored opportunities for technical support and capacity building in waste management, biodiversity conservation, renewable energy, and water and sanitation.

India and Maldives also agreed to finalize a free trade deal soon and work towards finalizing a bilateral investment treaty. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri indicated that both sides expect the FTA to be completed "fairly quickly".

This renewed collaboration is seen as a necessary and positive development, with observers noting that it signifies a remarkable turnaround in the relationship. Despite previous strains, both PM Modi and President Muizzu are being commended for restoring the decades-old relationship, aligning with the long-term interests of both countries.

President Muizzu's recent statements and the strengthened ties between the Maldives and India reflect a commitment to fostering a cooperative and mutually beneficial partnership, ensuring regional stability and shared prosperity.
