The preliminary report regarding the Air India Flight AI 171 plane crash that occurred on June 12, 2025, in Ahmedabad is expected to be made public soon. While some sources indicated a possible release date of today, July 11, 2025, others suggest it could be released by July 12. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has not yet submitted any report on the crash.
The Air India Boeing 787-8 aircraft, en route to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport, resulting in a devastating loss of life. 241 of the 242 people on board perished, and an additional 19 individuals on the ground were also killed. The crash has been described as the worst civil aviation disaster in over a decade globally and the worst in India in over 30 years. It also marks the first fatal crash of Boeing's latest-generation wide-body aircraft, the 787 Dreamliner.
The AAIB has launched a comprehensive investigation into the accident, with a multi-disciplinary team headed by Director General GVG Yugandhar. In addition to the AAIB's efforts, help from aircraft manufacturer Boeing and other foreign experts has been enlisted to conduct detailed investigations. The investigation has focused on the movement of the engine fuel control switches. Investigators are analyzing the aircraft's integrated flight and voice data recorders. The "black box" and voice recorder of the aircraft were found intact.
Under regulations set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), India is expected to submit a preliminary report within 30 days of the accident. The preliminary report will likely include essential details such as times and dates, location, aircraft information, flight specifics, crew and passenger information, and weather conditions. It will also present findings from the crash site, the lead investigator's name, the investigation's progress, and any necessary next steps. Preliminary reports typically establish the facts about the aircraft, crew, and the sequence of events leading to the accident. They also offer a basic analysis of the accident site and debris, and outline the steps taken in the investigation thus far.
