A new biography is revealing insights into Gwyneth Paltrow's true feelings about her former fiancé, Brad Pitt, and his subsequent marriage to Jennifer Aniston. According to Amy Odell's upcoming book, "Gwyneth: The Biography," the actress confided in friends that she felt "sad" when she learned of Pitt's marriage to Aniston in 2000. Furthermore, she reportedly told them that Pitt "has terrible taste in women".
Paltrow and Pitt's relationship began in 1994 after they met on the set of the film "Se7en". They quickly became one of Hollywood's most glamorous couples, captivating the public with their matching haircuts and romantic getaways. Pitt even told Rolling Stone that he "knew immediately" he had fallen for Paltrow. Paltrow reciprocated these feelings, later telling the Los Angeles Times that she "started getting a crush on him". By December 1996, the couple was engaged.
However, the engagement was short-lived, and in June 1997, they announced their split, shocking fans. Pitt's publicist stated that the breakup wasn't due to "any one specific event". Paltrow later reflected on the relationship, saying, "I think I was a kid, and I wasn't ready". She added, "He was too good for me". In a 2023 interview, Paltrow admitted that she was "totally heartbroken when we broke up," even though she was the one who called off the engagement. She cited their nine-year age difference and different life stages as contributing factors.
Despite the seemingly amicable explanation for their split, the new biography suggests Paltrow harbored some resentment towards Pitt following their breakup. In addition to allegedly commenting on Pitt's taste in women, Paltrow reportedly made disparaging remarks about him during a business meeting with Estée Lauder heiress Aerin Lauder. According to the book, Paltrow allegedly told Lauder that Pitt was "dumber than a sack of s**t".
The biography also sheds light on some of the issues that plagued Paltrow and Pitt's relationship. During the filming of "Emma," Paltrow reportedly expressed doubts to a crew member about Pitt being the right partner for her and admitted to having a crush on Hugh Grant. She also alluded to their different backgrounds, stating that she had to educate Pitt about different types of caviar.
Despite the drama surrounding their breakup and its aftermath, Paltrow and Pitt have since rekindled their friendship. In 2022, Pitt said that "it's lovely" to have Paltrow "as a friend now," to which Paltrow replied, "It is". Paltrow has also spoken fondly of Pitt in recent interviews, praising him as "an incredible person—smart, creative, a great entrepreneur, and just a good guy".
The claims made in "Gwyneth: The Biography" offer a new perspective on one of Hollywood's most talked-about relationships. While Paltrow and Pitt have both moved on and seemingly buried the hatchet, the book suggests that the breakup was not as clean and simple as it appeared. It remains to be seen whether Paltrow will address these claims directly.
