Actor Vijay Deverakonda is facing legal trouble after a case was filed against him under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The charges stem from comments he made regarding tribal communities during the pre-release event for the film Retro. The controversy has ignited a debate about freedom of speech, social responsibility, and the importance of sensitivity when discussing marginalized communities.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2025, at the JRC Convention Centre in Hyderabad, during the promotional event for the movie Retro, which stars actor Surya. Vijay Deverakonda, while addressing the audience, made remarks that have been interpreted as derogatory towards tribal communities. According to reports, Vijay addressed the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, and stated that the solution involves educating terrorists and changing their thought processes. He then added that the attacks in Kashmir were akin to clashes involving tribal communities 500 years ago, who were "fighting without applying mind and common sense".
These comments triggered immediate backlash. Nenavath Ashok Kumar Naik, also known as Ashok Rathod, the State President of the Joint Action Committee of Tribal Communities, filed a complaint alleging that Vijay's statements hurt the sentiments of tribal communities and were racially insensitive. The complaint, which led to the registration of the case on June 17, 2025, claims that the actor's comparison of tribal people to Pakistani terrorists was offensive and derogatory. Another complaint was filed by Kishan Raj Chauhan, president of the Tribal Lawyers' Association, Telangana.
Following the uproar, Vijay Deverakonda issued a clarification and apology on social media. In his statement, he expressed regret if his words caused offense and emphasized that he never intended to hurt or insult tribal communities. He clarified that he was speaking about unity among Indians and used the word "tribes" in a historical context, not referring to Scheduled Tribes. He affirmed his belief in peace and equality, stating that he sees everyone as part of his larger family. He wrote, "There was absolutely no intention to hurt or target any community, especially our Scheduled Tribes, whom I deeply respect and consider an integral part of our country. If any part of my message was misunderstood or hurtful, I express my sincere regret. My only aim was to speak of peace, progress, and togetherness. I remain committed to using my platform to uplift and unify – never to divide."
Despite the apology, the legal proceedings have continued. Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway, and the matter is being treated with seriousness. The case has sparked varied reactions online. Some people are calling for accountability and greater sensitivity from celebrities. Others argue that the remarks may have been taken out of context or exaggerated. Some observers suggest that Vijay's comparison was intended to highlight the futility of violence and conflict, regardless of the actors involved, and that his words were not meant to demean any particular community.
The incident underscores the need for public figures to exercise caution and sensitivity when discussing matters related to race, ethnicity, and historical injustices. It also highlights the importance of understanding the historical context and the potential impact of words on marginalized communities. This case serves as a reminder that even unintentional slights can have serious legal and social consequences.
