A tragic accident involving a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) vehicle in the Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir has resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and injuries to twelve others. The incident occurred near Kandva in the Basantgarh area.
Authorities responded swiftly to the scene, with police immediately launching a rescue operation. The injured personnel were promptly transported to a nearby hospital to receive medical treatment. Additional details regarding the cause of the accident are currently awaited. While the exact cause of the mishap is yet to be confirmed, initial reports indicate that the vehicle overturned and fell into a ditch during routine movement. Some reports suggest the vehicle plunged into a gorge.
Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh acknowledged the incident and confirmed that the district administration is closely monitoring the situation. "Disturbing to receive the news of a road accident involving a CRPF vehicle in the Kandva–Basantgarh area. The vehicle was carrying several brave jawans of the CRPF. I have just now spoken to DC Ms. Saloni Rai, who is personally monitoring the situation and keeping me updated," Singh stated.
The accident has raised concerns about the safety of security personnel operating in the region. The area's terrain and road conditions may have contributed to the accident.
This is not the first time CRPF personnel have been involved in accidents in the Udhampur district. In March 2023, four CRPF personnel were injured when their vehicle was hit by a truck on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
The incident comes at a sensitive time, as the region continues to grapple with security challenges. In August 2024, a CRPF officer was killed in a terrorist attack in the Dadu area of Udhampur. The attack, which occurred on a joint patrol of the CRPF and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, prompted a search operation in the area.
