A new First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia for allegedly obstructing a raid by the state vigilance bureau in Amritsar. The FIR, filed by Amritsar police, alleges that Majithia and his supporters were involved in physical altercations with police personnel and hindered official proceedings during the recent raid.
According to sources, the vigilance team accused Majithia of threatening officials, attempting to destroy key evidence, and provoking his supporters to create a confrontation with the raiding team. It is alleged that Majithia's supporters were mobilized to delay the proceedings and physically obstruct the officials. The vigilance team believes that the interference was a calculated move to prevent the collection of vital evidence and disrupt the ongoing investigation.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has strongly condemned the registration of the new FIR against Majithia, calling it a politically motivated move. Adv. Arshdeep Singh Kler, Chief Spokesperson of SAD, voiced concerns over the increasing number of legal cases against opposition leaders and questioned whether Punjab is on the path to becoming a police state. Kler claimed that the FIR was false and alleged that such actions are being used to intimidate political dissent. However, it is important to note that no government authority has officially confirmed this claim by SAD.
This development adds to the ongoing legal scrutiny faced by Majithia, intensifying the investigations around his activities. Previously, Majithia was sent to a seven-day vigilance remand for allegedly laundering more than Rs 540 crore of "drug money". The Vigilance Bureau had raided Majithia's house in Amritsar on Wednesday. Following the raid, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) supporters gathered outside Majithia's house and started sloganeering, prompting additional security forces to be sent to cordon off the area. Majithia's wife also confronted the Vigilance Bureau's official and took media personnel and supporters inside the house during the raid.
Authorities are continuing their probe into the incident and related matters. The Mohali Court is scheduled to hear Bikram Majithia's bail plea tomorrow (August 1). Further updates are awaited as the case progresses.
