England's Pacing Depth Tested: Woakes Injury Raises Concerns for Fifth Test's Remainder, Impacting Bowling Options

England's hopes of securing a series victory against India in the fifth and final Test at The Oval have been dealt a significant blow, as Chris Woakes sustained a shoulder injury on the first day. The extent of the injury is still being assessed, but early indications suggest that the 36-year-old may not be able to participate in the remainder of the match.

Woakes, who has been a consistent performer for England throughout the series, landed awkwardly on his left shoulder while fielding on the boundary. He was visibly in pain and left the field with his arm in a makeshift sling. An England spokesperson confirmed that Woakes would undergo a scan to determine the severity of the injury.

"I don't know too much about it, but it doesn't look great," said teammate Gus Atkinson after the day's play. "It's a big shame, last game of the series, and when anyone gets injured, it's a shame. I'm hoping it's not too bad, and whatever it is, he'll get full support from everyone". Atkinson, who was the pick of the England bowlers on the first day, added that he "will be surprised if he takes any further part in the game".

Woakes' injury adds to England's concerns, as they are already without several key players, including captain Ben Stokes. If Woakes is unable to bowl, England will be a bowler down for the remainder of the Test, placing additional pressure on the remaining bowlers.

Atkinson, who recently recovered from a hamstring injury, stated his readiness to shoulder more responsibility with the ball. "Definitely, I feel fresh, I feel good," Atkinson said. "I know I've only got this one game to play, so I can push the limits a bit".

The question of injury replacements in Test cricket has once again been raised. Sky Sports' Dinesh Karthik suggested that if the match referee deems Woakes' injury severe enough, England should be allowed to call up a replacement.

Woakes' potential absence would leave England's attack short on experience, with the remaining bowlers having a combined 18 Test caps. Despite the setback, Atkinson expressed confidence in his ability to contribute, saying, "I felt like I bowled well and challenged the batters at times".

India ended the rain-affected first day on 204 for six, with Karun Nair unbeaten on 52. Woakes had earlier taken the crucial wicket of KL Rahul.
