The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has voiced its support for Rahul Gandhi's recent remarks concerning the late Arun Jaitley, accusing the BJP of hypocrisy. This comes in the wake of Rahul Gandhi's claim that Jaitley was sent to threaten him during the farm law protests.
Gandhi made these allegations at the Annual Legal Conclave 2025, stating that Jaitley warned him of potential government action if he continued to oppose the farm laws. He further accused the NDA government of employing intimidation tactics and alleged large-scale voter fraud in the recent elections. Gandhi asserted that the Election Commission of India aided in this fraud, suggesting that manipulated results in a significant number of seats could have secured Narendra Modi's premiership. He also criticized what he sees as a systematic dismantling of the constitutional framework by the current government.
The BJP has reacted strongly to Gandhi's accusations. Rohan Jaitley, son of the late Arun Jaitley, refuted Gandhi's claims, emphasizing that his father, who passed away in 2019, was a "staunch democrat" who believed in consensus-building. He also pointed out the timeline discrepancy, noting that the farm laws were introduced in 2020, after his father's death. Rohan Jaitley urged Rahul Gandhi to be mindful when speaking about those who are no longer alive.
AAP's support for Rahul Gandhi highlights the complex dynamics within the Indian political landscape. While AAP and Congress are part of the INDIA bloc, there have been instances of disagreement and political maneuvering between the two parties. For instance, earlier in the year, Arvind Kejriwal responded to Rahul Gandhi's criticism during a Delhi rally by stating that Rahul's fight is to save Congress, while his fight is to save the country.
The current controversy also brings back previous instances where Arun Jaitley had criticized Rahul Gandhi. In 2016, Jaitley had accused Rahul Gandhi of sympathizing with those who wanted to "break India," referring to events at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Jaitley had stated that it was Congress's misfortune that Rahul Gandhi expressed sympathy towards what he described as a small group of Jihadists and a larger group of Maoists.
Rahul Gandhi's recent allegations and AAP's subsequent support have ignited a fresh round of political sparring, raising questions about electoral integrity, the legacy of political figures, and the ever-shifting alliances within Indian politics. Gandhi has vowed to reveal evidence to support his claims of election rigging.
