Nepal's Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli's planned visit to India is seen as a crucial step in strengthening trust between the two countries, according to foreign relations experts. They emphasize the importance of high-level discussions to address any existing challenges. Additionally, experts are encouraging Nepal to draw lessons from India's advancements in economic prosperity, development, and infrastructure, with a particular focus on road transport.

Prime Minister Oli's previous visits to India have been viewed as significant in improving bilateral relations. For instance, following a visit in April 2018, Oli stated that it had helped to clear up misunderstandings and strengthen mutual trust. He also noted that the trip had strengthened bilateral relations and would allow them to move forward on the basis of equality and mutual interest. During that visit, both countries agreed to expedite past agreements and conduct feasibility studies for projects such as the Raxaul-Kathmandu railway line.

In September 2024, Prime Minister Oli met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York. The meeting, which lasted approximately 45 minutes, was described as helping to further strengthen trust between the two countries. During the meeting, Modi expressed his intention to visit Nepal soon, and both leaders agreed to activate bilateral mechanisms to address various issues. Discussions focused on topics such as energy, technology, and trade.

Building mutual trust has been a recurring theme in discussions between the leaders of Nepal and India. After a three-day visit to India in April 2018, Prime Minister Oli remarked that his visit was productive in building mutual trust between the two countries. He conveyed to Indian leaders that Nepal aims to develop its relationship with India and other neighbors in line with the changing times. Oli also highlighted the importance of deals reached during the visit to enhance connectivity, including a new railway line and cooperation in inland waterways and organic agriculture.

Observers have noted the complexities in the relationship between Nepal and India, including factors such as Nepal's ties with China and historical issues related to the Madhesi people. It will be important for both countries to address any misunderstandings and work towards a stronger, more cooperative relationship. Experts suggest that Nepal can learn from India's progress in various sectors, particularly in infrastructure development.
