Following India's thrilling six-run victory against England in the fifth Test at The Oval, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor expressed his elation and also apologized for previously doubting the team. Tharoor took to social media to congratulate the team on their remarkable comeback and series-clinching win.
Tharoor lauded the team's grit, determination, and passion. He singled out Mohammed Siraj for his exceptional performance, acknowledging his crucial role in India's victory. Siraj's outstanding bowling in the second innings, where he and Prasidh Krishna together claimed nine wickets, was instrumental in India's success. Overall, Siraj finished with nine wickets in the match, while Krishna took six, and Akash Deep clinched five.
In a moment of humility, Tharoor admitted his earlier doubts about India's chances. He apologized for expressing his skepticism, stating that Siraj and the team never stopped believing. Tharoor's initial apprehension stemmed from the absence of Virat Kohli, whose leadership and batting prowess he felt were missed. He had even wondered if it was too late to call Kohli out of retirement, emphasizing the nation's need for him.
India's win at The Oval was a dramatic affair, with England initially in a strong position on the final morning, needing just 35 runs with four wickets in hand. However, Siraj's fiery spell turned the tide, leaving England stunned. His match-winning performance earned him the Player of the Match award. Siraj revealed that he had mentally prepared for the day by looking at a "Believe" emoji wallpaper on his phone and telling himself that he would do it for the country.
The victory at The Oval allowed India to level the series 2-2. The win also propelled India to third place in the updated World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 points table.
