The Indian national highway network is poised to undergo a significant transformation with the development of 5,000 new rest stops, offering a range of amenities to travelers. These "Wayside Amenities" (WSAs) will be strategically located every 30-40 kilometers on national highways and expressways, ensuring convenient access for commuters.
This initiative addresses a critical need for improved facilities along India's highways. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has recognized that while road infrastructure has expanded rapidly, the supporting ecosystem, particularly facilities for drivers and long-distance travelers, has lagged. The development of WSAs aims to bridge this gap, providing safe, clean, and accessible rest areas.
The proposed WSAs will offer a comprehensive suite of amenities. Mandatory facilities include clean toilets, food courts and restaurants, convenience stores, drinking water, and parking areas for various vehicles. First-aid medical facilities, baby care rooms, affordable eateries for truckers, and rest and dormitory space for drivers will also be available. Furthermore, permissible add-ons may include fuel stations, EV charging stations, ATMs, self-laundry and cooking areas for truckers, vehicle repair shops, tourist desks, telecom towers, and open gyms.
The National Highways Logistics Management Ltd (NHLML) is spearheading this initiative, with a proposed policy shift to allow development of WSAs on private land through a franchise model. While approximately 900 WSAs are already in the pipeline on government-owned land, the estimated demand is around 5,000 to adequately serve the national highways. This necessitates private sector participation, where private landowners can become franchisees of NHLML for WSA development. Landowners can also lease their land to NHLML for 30 years, in which case NHLML will appoint another entity to develop the site.
In addition to the development of comprehensive WSAs, the Indian government has launched the 'Apna Ghar' initiative, specifically aimed at improving the safety and well-being of truck drivers during long journeys. As of July 1, 2025, 368 "Apna Ghar" units have been established by Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) at fuel stations nationwide, offering over 4,600 beds. These units provide dormitory-style accommodation, clean toilets and bathing areas, purified drinking water, and access to restaurants or dhabas. Some locations even offer self-cooking spaces. A dedicated mobile app supports the "Apna Ghar" initiative, enabling truckers to book beds, locate facilities, and provide feedback.
These developments align with the government's commitment to improving road safety, reducing driver fatigue, and enhancing the overall commuting experience on national highways. By providing adequate rest and refreshment facilities, the new WSAs and "Apna Ghar" units will contribute to the health and well-being of highway users, while also promoting economic development and employment opportunities for local communities.
