The sister of Raj Kushwaha, an accused in the Meghalaya murder case, claims her brother is innocent and that he used to address Sonam Raghuvanshi, the wife of the deceased Raja Raghuvanshi, as "didi" (elder sister). Sonam is accused of plotting her husband's murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, allegedly with the help of Raj Kushwaha, who is an employee in her family-run business.
According to police, Sonam Raghuvanshi allegedly orchestrated the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon in Sohra, Meghalaya. It is alleged that Kushwaha helped plan the murder and involved three of his friends - Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan and Anand Kurmi - who were promised ₹20 lakh by Sonam.
Raj's sister, Suhani, however, insists on his innocence. Speaking to NDTV, she stated that her 21-year-old brother used to call 24-year-old Sonam Raghuvanshi 'didi' and only spoke to her about office-related matters. She added that her brother never spoke to the family about Sonam. According to Suhani, Sonam would call him in the morning, sometimes the family members would answer and she would tell them it was time for him to get to work because there was a vehicle waiting to be loaded. She said he worked in Sonam's office for two years.
Suhani also claimed that Kushwaha was in Indore on May 23, the day Raja Raghuvanshi was murdered in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills. When asked how Kushwaha would address Sonam, Suhani said that he and Sonam would only talk about work and that they would not talk regularly. She said he would say 'didi is calling, answer and tell her that I will be reaching work soon'.
Suhani mentioned that no one from the family attended Sonam's wedding on May 11 because they had gone to their village. Kushwaha was in Indore "to pay rent", she said, but he did not attend the wedding either as something had happened to their father on May 11 and no one from the family celebrated on that date.
In an interview with PTI, Raj Kushwaha's mother, Chunni Devi, also claimed that her son is innocent and has been framed. She said that Raj was distressed after Raja Raghuvanshi's death and attended his funeral procession and "cried inconsolably" when he returned home. She added that Raj had been working at the business establishment owned by Sonam's family for the last two years.
Indore Police stated that Raj Kushwaha worked as an accountant at the furniture sheet unit owned by Sonam's family, despite only having passed class 12. Police officials said that Kushwaha and the three other men hired for executing the crime knew each other for a long time. According to police, Kushwaha didn't travel to Meghalaya to avoid suspicion and went about his daily routine.
A viral video showed Raj Kushwaha comforting Sonam's father, Devi Singh Raghuvanshi, ahead of Raja Raghuvanshi's funeral. On the other hand, Raja’s father, Ashok Raghuvanshi, demanded the death penalty for all culprits.
Sonam Raghuvanshi surrendered at the Nandganj police station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, after Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi were arrested from Uttar Pradesh, Indore, and Sagar towns.
Sonam's mother, Sangeeta, claimed that false allegations were being raised against her daughter and demanded a detailed investigation into the murder case.
