Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, submitting a bid after Newcastle United's improved offer. The pursuit of the highly-rated 22-year-old Slovenian international is intensifying as Premier League clubs seek to reinforce their attacking options.
Newcastle had already made a second approach to Leipzig after their initial bid, reportedly worth €75 million (£65.1m) with a further €5 million (£4.3m) in potential add-ons, was turned down the previous week. Their improved offer is understood to be at least €80 million (£69.5m).
Not to be outdone, Manchester United, managed by Ruben Amorim, have now made a formal offer of their own, reportedly worth €75 million (£65.1m) plus a potential €10 million (£8.7m) in add-ons, as they aim to bring Sesko to Old Trafford. Sky Sports reports that Manchester United's bid is just under £74m, consisting of an initial £65m plus around £8.9m in performance-related add-ons.
According to reports, Sesko has told both United and Newcastle that he 'only wants to join them'. Sky Sports indicates that Sesko is open to both projects but is leaning towards Manchester United if they can agree to a deal. However, Newcastle have been given encouragement that Sesko would be open to a move.
RB Leipzig managing director for sport, Marcel Schäfer, confirmed that clubs have approached them regarding Sesko. He also stated that the club decided Sesko would not play in Leipzig's friendly against Atalanta due to the "very concrete interest from several clubs".
Sesko's potential arrival at Manchester United casts doubt on the future of Rasmus Hojlund at the club. It is understood that United would be willing to listen to suitable offers for Hojlund.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is keen to ship out players like Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia. The club has already strengthened their squad with the additions of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Diego Leon. Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan, while Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof have been released. Amorim is also reportedly looking to add a midfielder to the squad.
Newcastle's pursuit of Sesko comes as they face the potential departure of Alexander Isak, who is reportedly wanted by Liverpool. Newcastle are also reportedly targeting Crystal Palace defender Marc Guéhi.
Sesko has been described as a versatile player, capable of playing in various attacking roles. In his two seasons with Leipzig, he has scored 27 goals in 64 matches. During the last Bundesliga season, he took 68 shots, hitting the target 31 times and scoring 13 goals.
Both Manchester United and Newcastle will be hoping to conclude a deal for Sesko swiftly as they look to bolster their squads ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
