In a tragic incident in Maharashtra's Sangli district, a 24-year-old man, Pratap Rajendra Chavan, has been arrested for allegedly killing his childhood friend, Mayur Sachin Sathe, also 24, by smashing his head with a stone. The incident occurred in the Kupwad industrial area.
According to reports, the two men were drinking together throughout the day. An argument broke out when Sathe allegedly took money from Chavan's pocket without his consent. This led to a heated exchange, culminating in Chavan attacking Sathe with a stone, resulting in his death at the scene.
Following the incident, Chavan surrendered himself to the Kupwad police station and confessed to the crime. The police have registered a case, and further investigations are underway.
This is not an isolated incident. In a similar case in Mumbai in 2022, a man killed his friend for refusing to give him money to buy alcohol. The accused, Baba Pawar, was arrested for hitting Ansari, the victim, on the head with a large rock while he was asleep. Ansari had denied Pawar's request for money to purchase liquor, leading to a fight between the two. Pawar then returned and committed the fatal act.
In another incident in Thane in 2023, a 24-year-old man allegedly killed his friend while intoxicated. The victim, Amjat Khan, 23, was drinking with the accused when an argument broke out. The accused then attacked Khan with a bamboo stick and stones, killing him on the spot.
These incidents highlight the dangers of alcohol consumption and the potential for violence, especially when coupled with disputes over money. They also raise concerns about the easy availability of weapons and the need for stricter law enforcement to prevent such tragedies.
