Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, reaffirming India's commitment to a peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. During their conversation, Zelenskyy shared his perspective on recent developments. Modi conveyed India's consistent support for efforts aimed at restoring peace at the earliest.
Zelenskyy stated that it is important that India is supporting Ukraine's peace efforts and shares the position that everything concerning Ukraine must be decided with Ukraine's participation, adding that other formats will not deliver results. He also mentioned discussing sanctions and the need to limit Russian energy exports, particularly oil, to reduce Russia's ability to finance the war.
Modi, in a post on X, mentioned he was glad to speak with President Zelenskyy and hear his views on the situation.
The conversation occurred ahead of planned peace talks in Alaska between Russian President Vladimir Putin and United States President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy voiced concerns about Ukraine's exclusion from these talks, as well as previous talks in Saudi Arabia, and appealed to India to ensure that decisions taken at such talks are not imposed on his country. The White House indicated they were considering inviting Kyiv to the Alaska talks.
India has endorsed the forthcoming Trump-Putin meeting, with the External Affairs Ministry stating that the meeting "holds the promise of bringing to an end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and opening up the prospects for peace".
Zelenskyy also reported that Russia attacked urban facilities, including a bus station in Zaporizhzhia, which injured dozens. He said this occurred when there is finally a diplomatic possibility to end the war and that instead of demonstrating readiness for a ceasefire, Russia is showing only its desire to continue the occupation and killings.
