Alexander Isak has publicly accused Newcastle United of breaking promises, casting a shadow over his future with the club and intensifying speculation of a move to Liverpool. In a statement released on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the Swedish striker expressed his disappointment and declared that his relationship with Newcastle "can't continue" due to the broken promises and loss of trust.
Isak, who was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25, chose to miss the PFA Awards ceremony in Manchester. In his social media statement, he explained that attending the event "didn't feel right" given the circumstances. He thanked his teammates and everyone at Newcastle for their support but then addressed the core issue.
"I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken," Isak stated. "That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors". He then claimed, "The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading".
Isak's statement strongly suggests a breakdown in communication and trust between him and the club. He emphasized that "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue" and that a "change is in the best interest of everyone, not just myself".
Liverpool have been heavily linked with Isak throughout the summer, with reports suggesting an initial bid of £110 million was rejected by Newcastle. Isak has reportedly been training away from Newcastle's first team. Newcastle, on the other hand, have been struggling to find a potential replacement.
Isak's absence from Newcastle's Premier League opener against Aston Villa, which ended in a 0-0 draw, further fueled the transfer rumors. With the transfer window closing on September 1, Liverpool are expected to return with an improved offer for the 25-year-old.
