A political storm is brewing in Delhi following an attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing at her residence on August 20, 2025. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned the incident, alleging a political conspiracy behind the assault.
According to reports, the incident occurred during the Chief Minister's weekly "Jan Sunwai" program, where she addresses public concerns. A man, described as being in his 30s, approached Gupta and physically attacked her. Some reports indicate the attacker slapped the Chief Minister and pulled her hair. Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva said the attacker tried to pull the Chief Minister by the hand, leading to a scuffle in which her head may have hit a corner. The Chief Minister's security personnel immediately apprehended the attacker, who had allegedly disguised himself as a complainant. He is currently being questioned by the Delhi Police.
Following the attack, Gupta was rushed to the hospital. Doctors have confirmed that she is stable but in shock. Top Delhi Police officers have secured her residence, and an inquiry has been initiated to investigate the security breach. Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh will be monitoring the probe.
The BJP has reacted strongly, with leaders suggesting the attack was politically motivated. Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated that Gupta's rivals cannot tolerate her work and that an investigation is underway to uncover who orchestrated the attack. Virendraa Sachdeva, Delhi BJP chief, also described the incident as a "serious breach of security" and demanded accountability.
The opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also condemned the attack. AAP leader Atishi, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, stated that there is no place for violence in a democracy and expressed hope that the Delhi Police would take strict action against the culprits. The Congress party has also condemned the attack, raising questions about the law and order situation in Delhi.
The incident has triggered a political row, with various parties weighing in on the matter. The BJP's allegations of a political conspiracy have added fuel to the fire, raising questions about the motives behind the attack and the security arrangements for the Chief Minister. As the Delhi Police investigates the incident, the political ramifications are likely to intensify, potentially further straining relations between the ruling party and its rivals.
