The Punjabi film industry is in mourning following the death of veteran actor and comedian Jaswinder Bhalla, who passed away on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the age of 65. Bhalla, known for his impeccable comic timing and unforgettable characters like "Advocate Dhillon" and "Chacha Chatra," breathed his last at Fortis Hospital in Mohali. He had been unwell for some time and was admitted to the hospital a few days prior to his death. According to reports, Bhalla suffered a brain stroke on Wednesday evening.
News of his death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, fans, and political figures. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed deep sorrow, acknowledging Bhalla's immense contribution to Punjabi humor and culture. In a post on X, Mann wrote in Punjabi that the "sudden departure of Jaswinder Bhalla Ji from this world is extremely sorrowful… The heart is saddened by the silence of the jingle of Chhankatian… May Waheguru grant him a place at His feet… Chacha Chatra will always reside in our hearts".
Many others have shared their condolences and memories of the beloved actor. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Singh Badal remembered Bhalla as a "wonderful human being" who "ruled the hearts of Punjabis". Cricketer Harbhajan Singh acknowledged Bhalla as a "cultural icon" who represented Punjab's "wit, wisdom, and everyday struggles". Politicians such as Amarinder Singh Raja Warring also shared condolences, recognizing Bhalla's contribution and love for the community.
Jaswinder Bhalla's career spanned decades, during which he made a significant impact on Punjabi cinema and theatre. He was widely recognized for his roles in hit films such as Carry on Jatta, Mahaul Theek Hai, Jatt Airways, and Jatt & Juliet 2. Beyond his work in entertainment, Bhalla was also a dedicated academic. He earned a PhD in Extension Education and served as a professor and head of the Department of Extension Education at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) before retiring in 2020.
Bhalla's last rites will be held on August 23 at 12 noon at the Balongi cremation ground in Mohali. A large number of fans and artists are expected to gather to pay their final respects. He is survived by his wife, Parmdeep Bhalla, and his son, Pukhraj Bhalla, who is also an actor.
