NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) displayed a commanding performance, securing a resounding 6-1 victory against Diamond Harbour FC in the Durand Cup 2025 final at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. With this win, NorthEast United successfully defended their title, marking their second consecutive Durand Cup win.

The final saw a dominant display from the Highlanders, although Diamond Harbour showed initial promise. Asheer Akhtar opened the scoring for NorthEast United, capitalizing on a rebound after a chaotic sequence in the box. Just before halftime, Parthib Gogoi doubled the lead with a stunning strike, curling the ball into the top corner.

The second half witnessed NorthEast United বাড়ানো their dominance. Thoi Singh extended the lead, followed by goals from Jairo Samperio, Andy Rodriguez and Alaaeddine Ajaraie. Diamond Harbour managed a consolation goal from a corner, but it wasn't enough to shift the momentum. Ajaraie's performance was particularly noteworthy, as he contributed a goal and two assists to his team's victory.

NorthEast United remained unbeaten throughout the 134th edition of the Durand Cup. Their journey to the final included overcoming stiff competition, showcasing their resilience and teamwork. The final victory underscored their attacking strength and cemented their position as a rising force in Indian football.

Diamond Harbour FC, making their debut in the tournament, had a remarkable run to the final, including a 2-1 victory over East Bengal in the semi-final. However, they were outclassed by a clinical NorthEast United side in the final. Despite the loss, Diamond Harbour's journey from the CFL First Division to the I-League in a mere five years is an achievement.

The match also highlighted key battles, including Alaaeddine Ajaraie against Ajith Kumar and Andy Rodriguez versus Samuel Lalmuanpuia. Ajaraie, the tournament's leading goal scorer with eight goals, has been a pivotal player for NorthEast United. Andy Rodriguez, stepping in for Mohammed Ali Bemammer, has played a crucial role in shielding the defense and orchestrating plays.

With this win, NEUFC not only lifted their second consecutive Durand Cup but also secured a record prize of ₹1.21 crore, the highest in the tournament's 137-year history. NorthEast United's victory marks a significant achievement, as they are the first team to defend their Durand Cup trophy since East Bengal's three-year streak in 1989-1991.
