India's defense sector has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade, evolving from a largely import-dependent model to a "trusted global exporter." This assertion was made by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, highlighting the significant strides taken under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. The shift is attributed to the government's strong emphasis on the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) and 'Make in India' initiatives.
The numbers speak for themselves. Defence exports have seen an unprecedented surge, jumping from ₹1,940 crore in 2014-15 to ₹23,622 crore in 2024-25. This remarkable growth reflects the increasing capabilities of the domestic defence industry and its growing competitiveness in the global market. This 34-fold increase showcases the government's sharp focus on building a self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry. In 2023–24, the country recorded its highest ever defence production, touching Rs 1.27-lakh crores, a sharp rise of 174 per cent compared to Rs 46,429 crore in 2014–15.
Several key achievements underscore this transformation. India's first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, stands as a testament to the country's shipbuilding capabilities. The Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand, an indigenous multi-role combat helicopter, showcases advancements in aerospace engineering. Furthermore, progress in missile technology has enhanced India's deterrence capabilities. These accomplishments demonstrate the growing sophistication and innovation within the Indian defence sector.
The 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' initiatives have played a pivotal role in fostering this growth. These programs have encouraged domestic production, reduced reliance on imports, and attracted significant investments in the defence sector. The rise of defence corridors has further boosted manufacturing and created employment opportunities. This has led to record-high defence exports to over 100 countries.
The government is providing further impetus by modernizing the armed forces. Strategic global partnerships have been deepened and historic milestones in space exploration have been achieved. The defence budget has been steadily increased to support modernization and indigenous development efforts. In 2024–25, the ministry of defence signed 193 contracts worth Rs 2,09,050 crores — the highest ever in a single year, Of these, 177 contracts were awarded to the domestic industry, amounting to Rs 1,68,922 crores.
Rajnath Singh has emphasized that these achievements reflect India's progress towards autonomy, strength, and international strategic prominence. By becoming a trusted global exporter, India not only enhances its economic growth but also strengthens its position as a responsible and reliable player in the international arena.
