The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the alleged gang rape of a law student in Kolkata and is likely to meet with the victim and her family. The NCW has expressed deep concern over the incident that reportedly occurred within college premises in South Kolkata.

The Commission has formally communicated with the Commissioner of Police in Kolkata, demanding a detailed action-taken report within three days. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has emphasized the necessity of an immediate and time-bound investigation under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Furthermore, she stressed the importance of extending comprehensive medical, psychological, and legal support to the victim, alongside compensation as mandated under Section 396 of the BNSS.

According to police reports, the incident occurred on the evening of June 25 when the student visited the college. Allegedly, she was taken to a room inside the educational institution by three individuals – two senior students and one former student – where the gang rape occurred. Police have arrested all three accused in connection with the crime.

Adding complexity to the situation, the NCW has alleged that the Kolkata police are obstructing their investigation. Conversely, sources within the Kolkata Police claim that medical examinations of the victim were promptly conducted. According to these sources, after the victim filed a police complaint, she was immediately taken to CNMC Kolkata National Medical College for a medical examination. Following the arrests, she was also taken to Kolkata Medical College for a medico-legal examination. However, a senior doctor was not present at the time, and the Kolkata police were unwilling to proceed with only a junior doctor available. The medical legal examination is reportedly now being conducted.

The alleged involvement of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) student leader in the crime has ignited political outrage and protests. The NCW's intervention underscores the gravity of the situation and its commitment to ensuring justice for the victim. The conflicting statements between the NCW and Kolkata Police regarding cooperation in the investigation raise concerns about transparency and accountability. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing investigations and conflicting reports adding layers of complexity to the case.
