The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a widespread heavy rainfall alert for several states across India, forecasting intense weather conditions from July 20 to July 26. The alert covers Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and several southern states, with predictions of heavy to very heavy rainfall. This weather pattern is attributed to active monsoon conditions and the formation of multiple low-pressure systems.

Affected Regions and Specific Forecasts

Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh: These states are expected to experience intense rainfall from July 20 to 24. Uttarakhand is particularly vulnerable from July 20 to 22, while Himachal Pradesh will face the brunt of the downpour from July 21 to 23. Heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods in eight districts of Himachal Pradesh and 11 districts of Uttarakhand.
Southern States: Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 6-7 days. Strong surface winds, reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph, are also expected in South Peninsular India during this period. Specifically, Tamil Nadu is expected to have heavy to very heavy rainfall till July 22, and Telangana until July 24. Moreover, Kerala, Mahe, Coastal and South Interior Karnataka are expected to have heavy to very heavy rainfall until July 26.
Northwest India: Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are expected to receive varied rainfall from July 20 to 26. Key dates to note include West Uttar Pradesh on July 20-21, East Rajasthan on July 22 & 26, and Haryana on July 21-22.
West India: Konkan & Goa, and the Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, are predicted to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall from July 20-26. Saurashtra & Kutch are likely to experience similar conditions on July 20, while Marathwada may see heavy rainfall on July 21.
East & Central India: Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Vidarbha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Gangetic West Bengal are also bracing for heavy rainfall between July 20 and 26. A fresh low-pressure system is expected to form over this region, exacerbating the rainfall. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Northeast India are expected to have heavy to very heavy rainfall throughout July 20–26.

Potential Impacts and Warnings

The IMD has warned of potential flash floods in several districts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The heavy rainfall could lead to widespread damage to private property and public infrastructure.

As of July 20, 2025, India has received 366.4 mm of rainfall, which is about 7% more than the normal level of 342.1 mm for this period.
