The Indian Armed Forces are set to receive a significant boost in their operational capabilities with the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approving procurement proposals worth approximately Rs 67,000 crore. Chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on August 5, 2025, the DAC cleared these proposals to modernize the Army, Navy, and Air Force with advanced technologies and equipment.
Focus on Enhanced Capabilities
The approved proposals demonstrate a clear emphasis on enhancing the surveillance, combat readiness, and technological integration of the Indian military. Key areas of focus include:
Broader Defence Modernization
This recent approval of Rs 67,000 crore worth of procurements aligns with the Indian government's broader vision of modernizing the armed forces and promoting self-reliance in defence production. The Union Budget 2025-26 allocated Rs 6,81,210.27 crore (USD 77.4 billion) for the Ministry of Defence, marking a 9.5% increase from the previous year. A significant portion of this budget is earmarked for domestic procurement, reflecting the government's commitment to the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) initiative. The Ministry has decided to observe 2025-26 as the "Year of Reforms", to streamline the Defence Procurement Procedure to ensure optimum utilization of allocated funds.
The government is also focused on integrating cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and surveillance systems into the armed forces. Furthermore, investments in border security infrastructure and military training facilities are being prioritized to enhance operational readiness and preparedness for modern warfare.
