The Indian Armed Forces are set to receive a significant boost in their operational capabilities with the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approving procurement proposals worth approximately Rs 67,000 crore. Chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on August 5, 2025, the DAC cleared these proposals to modernize the Army, Navy, and Air Force with advanced technologies and equipment.

Focus on Enhanced Capabilities

The approved proposals demonstrate a clear emphasis on enhancing the surveillance, combat readiness, and technological integration of the Indian military. Key areas of focus include:

  • Night Mobility and Mechanized Infantry: The Indian Army will acquire Thermal Imager-based Night Sights for the drivers of BMP infantry combat vehicles. This upgrade will significantly improve the night driving capabilities of these vehicles, providing a crucial operational advantage to the mechanized infantry during low-visibility conditions.
  • Anti-Submarine Warfare: The Indian Navy is set to procure Compact Autonomous Surface Craft (CASC) designed for anti-submarine warfare missions. These craft will enhance the Navy's capabilities in detecting, classifying, and neutralizing underwater threats. The DAC also approved the procurement of BrahMos Fire Control Systems and Launchers, and the upgrade of the BARAK-1 Point Defence Missile System.
  • Air Surveillance and Defence: The Indian Air Force will receive Mountain Radars to enhance air surveillance capabilities along mountainous borders. This will enable the IAF to detect and neutralize threats in challenging terrains more effectively. Additionally, the SAKSHAM/SPYDER weapon system will be upgraded and integrated with the Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS), further strengthening India's air defense capabilities.
  • Long-Range Surveillance and Combat: All three branches of the Armed Forces will benefit from the procurement of Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs). These RPAs can carry multiple payloads and weapons and operate at longer ranges for extended missions, significantly enhancing the round-the-clock surveillance and combat capabilities of the Armed Forces.

Broader Defence Modernization

This recent approval of Rs 67,000 crore worth of procurements aligns with the Indian government's broader vision of modernizing the armed forces and promoting self-reliance in defence production. The Union Budget 2025-26 allocated Rs 6,81,210.27 crore (USD 77.4 billion) for the Ministry of Defence, marking a 9.5% increase from the previous year. A significant portion of this budget is earmarked for domestic procurement, reflecting the government's commitment to the "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India) initiative. The Ministry has decided to observe 2025-26 as the "Year of Reforms", to streamline the Defence Procurement Procedure to ensure optimum utilization of allocated funds.

The government is also focused on integrating cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and surveillance systems into the armed forces. Furthermore, investments in border security infrastructure and military training facilities are being prioritized to enhance operational readiness and preparedness for modern warfare.
