The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project. This expansion aims to improve public transportation in Lucknow, particularly in the older parts of the city. The project, with a total investment of ₹5,801 crore, will add 11.165 kilometers to the metro network, featuring 12 stations.

Key Features of Phase-1B

The new corridor will have a mix of underground and elevated stations, with seven stations underground and five elevated. Once Phase-1B is operational, Lucknow will have an active metro network spanning 34 kilometers. The East-West Corridor will link Charbagh to Vasant Kunj, passing through the heart of Old Lucknow. The targeted completion time for the project is five years. The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) will soon begin the tendering process for construction.

Route and Connectivity

Phase-1B is designed to connect commercial areas like Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk. It will also provide access to healthcare facilities such as King George's Medical University, and tourist destinations including Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Clock Tower, and Rumi Darwaza. The corridor will link culinary zones known for Lucknow's food culture. The East-West Corridor will integrate with the existing North-South Corridor at Charbagh Metro Station, creating a key interchange hub.

The stations on the East-West Corridor will include Charbagh (Underground), Gautam Buddha Nagar (Underground), Aminabad (Underground), Pandeyganj (Underground), City Railway Station (Underground), Medical Chauraha (Underground), Chowk (Underground), Thakurganj (Elevated), Balaganj (Elevated), Sarfarazganj (Elevated), Moosabagh (Elevated), and Vasant Kunj (Elevated).

The metro extension is expected to reduce traffic congestion, especially in densely populated areas. It will offer an alternative to road transport, potentially lowering travel times and improving road safety. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions compared to fossil fuel-based transport. Additional Information

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project was approved by the Uttar Pradesh government in March 2024 and received Network Planning clearance in July 2024. The Public Investment Board recommended the project in May 2025.
