Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh announced on Tuesday that Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party have decided to support the candidature of retired Supreme Court judge Justice B. Sudershan Reddy for the upcoming Vice Presidential elections. Justice Reddy has been named as the joint candidate of the opposition parties.

The announcement follows a meeting of opposition leaders at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's residence. The selection of Justice Reddy is being framed as an "ideological battle" against the BJP-led NDA. Mallikarjun Kharge stated that Justice Reddy is a champion of social, economic, and political justice, and that his candidature reflects the values of the country's freedom movement and the Constitution.

Sources indicate that Derek O'Brien of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) met with Arvind Kejriwal to secure the AAP's support for Justice Reddy. The AAP, while no longer a part of the INDIA bloc, has pledged its support to Justice Reddy, who INDIA leaders are touting as a joint Opposition candidate. The INDIA bloc considered several names, including former ISRO scientist Mylswamy Annadurai and Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi. However, a consensus formed around Justice Reddy.

Justice B. Sudershan Reddy's background includes serving as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court and as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court before his tenure in the Supreme Court from 2007 to 2011. Kharge described him as a distinguished and progressive jurist.

The decision to field a Telugu candidate has created a complex situation for political parties from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Parties like TDP, YSRCP, Jana Sena and BRS now face a dilemma on whether to support Justice Reddy.

The Vice Presidential election is scheduled for September 9, 2025. Justice Reddy is expected to file his nomination on August 21, with a meeting of opposition parties planned beforehand. The AAP, founded in 2012 by Arvind Kejriwal, has seen fluctuating electoral success. It currently governs the state of Punjab. While the AAP has been a significant force in Delhi politics, it experienced a decline in the 2025 Delhi Legislative Assembly election.
