Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mitali Bagh has alleged that Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Ravneet Singh Bittu assaulted her during protests in Parliament. The incident reportedly occurred amidst uproar surrounding the tabling of bills aimed at removing arrested ministers.

According to Bagh, the altercation took place while opposition members were protesting the bill, which proposes amending the Constitution to allow for the removal of a Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or any minister who spends 30 consecutive days in jail on criminal charges. Bagh stated that Rijiju and Bittu "attacked" and "pushed" her during the demonstration, calling the alleged behavior "condemnable".

Government sources, however, have disputed Bagh's account. These sources claim that the Speaker's office has reviewed CCTV footage of the incident and found no evidence of any TMC MP being manhandled. They added that the CCTV footage is still undergoing further examination.

The bills in question have sparked significant controversy in Parliament, with opposition parties decrying them as a "backdoor attempt to topple non-BJP governments". They argue that the bills would grant the central government the power to remove elected leaders through biased investigative agencies and arbitrary arrests. Congress MP Manish Tewari voiced strong opposition to the bills, warning they would undermine constitutional safeguards and enable political misuse by state agencies.

This is not the first time Mitali Bagh has been involved in a contentious situation. In May 2024, during the Lok Sabha elections, Bagh alleged that her car was attacked by BJP workers in Bengal. She claimed that the attackers, backed by MLA Sushanta Ghosh, surrounded her vehicle with the intent to harm her. The TMC denounced the incident, attributing it to the BJP's desperation in the face of potential electoral defeat. Visuals from the scene showed a vehicle with a smashed rear windshield and windows. The TMC alleged that the BJP has an "anti-Bengal & anti-woman mindset".

In August 2025, Bagh was reportedly injured and hospitalized during a protest organized by INDIA bloc MPs against alleged manipulation of voter lists. The TMC claimed that female MPs were "dragged, manhandled, and assaulted" by the Delhi Police during the protest, with Bagh requiring medical treatment. The party accused Amit Shah's Delhi Police of targeting Bagh for standing up for voting rights and challenging the BJP-ECI nexus.

Ravneet Singh Bittu, one of the ministers accused by Bagh, has also been a figure of controversy in the past. In September 2024, Bittu made remarks about Rahul Gandhi that drew criticism and led to protests from Congress members. Bittu has also been known for his strong stance against pro-Khalistani elements.
