Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka recently met in Delhi to discuss strengthening the partnership between India and Fiji. This was Rabuka's first visit to India in his current role. The leaders engaged in extensive discussions, with a significant focus on addressing terrorism and reinforcing cooperation in various sectors.

A key outcome of the meeting was the condemnation of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Both leaders reiterated their zero tolerance stance on terrorism and rejected any double standards in addressing the issue. They acknowledged the need to counter radicalization, combat the financing of terrorism, prevent the misuse of emerging technologies for terrorist purposes, and tackle terrorist recruitment and transnational organized crime through joint efforts and capacity building. To this end, both countries agreed to collaborate at the UN and other multilateral forums to combat terrorism.

The Pahalgam attack, which occurred in April 2025, involved terrorists killing at least 26 people, mostly tourists, and injuring several others. The attack drew strong condemnation nationally and internationally. Prime Minister Modi vowed to punish those responsible. Home Minister Amit Shah met with survivors and assured them that the perpetrators would be brought to justice. The Jammu and Kashmir government announced ex-gratia for the families of the deceased and injured.

Beyond the issue of terrorism, Modi and Rabuka discussed a broad range of areas for enhanced cooperation. They decided to strengthen mutual cooperation in the defense and security sector, with an action plan prepared to advance this partnership. India will provide cooperation in training and equipment to empower Fiji's maritime security and both nations are ready to share their experiences in cybersecurity and data protection.

Several agreements and MoUs were exchanged between India and Fiji, covering health, standardization, capacity building, and big impact projects. A 100-bed super-specialty hospital will be constructed in Suva, Fiji's capital. India will also send dialysis units and sea ambulances and set up Jan Aushadhi centers to ensure affordable, high-quality medicine. India gifted 12 agricultural drones and 2 mobile soil testing laboratories to promote innovation and enhance productivity in Fiji's sugar sector.

Climate change, a critical threat for Fiji, was also addressed. Both countries are working together on renewable energy and are members of the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and the Global Biofuels Alliance.

India and Fiji share long-standing ties rooted in history, culture, and people-to-people connections. India has been a key development partner for Fiji, supporting its nation-building efforts across critical sectors through infrastructure and capacity building initiatives. The Visa Waiver Agreement and healthcare collaborations signal a deepening of trust, while cultural exchanges continue to strengthen bonds.
