The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has called on the United States government to consider a humanitarian perspective in the case of Harjinder Singh, an Indian truck driver arrested following a fatal accident in Florida. The party has also appealed to the Indian government to provide consular and legal assistance to Singh.
The resolution was passed during a meeting of senior SAD leaders from six districts of Punjab, presided over by party president Sukhbir Singh Badal. Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old truck driver originally from the Tarn Taran district of Punjab, faces vehicular homicide charges in the U.S. after an accident in Florida that resulted in three fatalities. Reports indicate that Singh's truck allegedly made a wrong turn on a highway. After the incident, he reportedly fled to California but was later arrested and brought back to Florida.
Sukhbir Singh Badal described Harjinder Singh as a hardworking member of the Punjabi and Sikh diaspora who deserves a fair trial. He also voiced concerns about reports that Harjinder Singh was presented in court without his turban, which is a significant and sacred part of the Sikh faith, and called it an insensitive act that has hurt the Sikh community worldwide.
The SAD resolution conveyed sympathy to the families of the victims of the accident. It urged the U.S. government to consider Harjinder Singh's background, the circumstances surrounding the accident, and the broader contributions of the Punjabi community. The resolution further called upon the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure that Singh has access to all available legal defenses through the Indian embassy and consulate. Additionally, the Punjab government was requested to show solidarity with Singh's family and provide appropriate support.
The SAD has also appealed to Sikh and Punjabi diaspora organizations in North America to provide moral, financial, and legal assistance to Harjinder Singh during this challenging time. The party acknowledged the significant contributions of Punjabi and Sikh truck drivers to the economies of both India and the U.S.. It reaffirmed its commitment to stand with the global Punjabi community and ensure justice, dignity, and humanitarian support for all.
