The upcoming romantic comedy "Param Sundari," starring Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, is slated to release on August 29, 2025. The film has been embroiled in controversy ahead of its release, with objections raised by a Christian group regarding a scene filmed in a church. Despite the controversy, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has passed the film with a U/A 13+ certificate, but has asked for certain words to be muted.
The Watchdog Foundation, a Christian group based in Mumbai, has taken offense to a scene in "Param Sundari" featuring Janhvi Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra flirting in a church. The group has formally lodged a complaint with the CBFC, the Mumbai Police, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and the Maharashtra state government, demanding the removal of the scene from the film, its trailer, and promotional videos. Advocate Godfrey Pimenta of the Watchdog Foundation stated that the CBFC is entrusted with certifying films while considering both artistic expression and respect for religious feelings.
In its letter, the Watchdog Foundation argued that depicting a church, a sacred place of worship for Christians, as a stage for indecent content disrespects the spiritual sanctity of the religious site and deeply offends the sensibilities of the Catholic community. The group has questioned the CBFC's clearance of the scene and warned of public protests if it is not removed. They have also demanded an FIR against the film's producer, director, and actors for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the Catholic community.
Despite the objections, the CBFC has passed "Param Sundari" with a U/A 13+ certificate, without any visual cuts. However, the board has asked for the words "church," "father," and "bloody" to be muted in the film. Additionally, the song "Sun Mere Yaar Ve" was allowed in the end credits. The film's total length is 2 hours and 16 minutes.
"Param Sundari" is directed by Tushar Jalota and produced by Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films. The film revolves around a cross-cultural romance between a Delhi boy and a girl from Kerala. Besides Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor, the film also stars Rajeev Khandelwal and Aakash Dahiya.
