A major landslide has struck Arunachal Pradesh, specifically impacting the Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang (BCT) National Highway, a crucial route connecting Dirang and Tawang. The incident, triggered by heavy monsoon rains, occurred near Sapper Camp in the West Kameng district.
The landslide sent boulders tumbling down the hillside, blocking approximately 120 meters of the highway. Dramatic videos circulating on social media capture the chaos as commuters scramble to safety, reversing their vehicles to avoid the falling rocks. Panicked voices can be heard in the videos, highlighting the fear and urgency of the situation.
While there have been no reported casualties, the falling rocks damaged several vehicles. A Gypsy and a Bolero were among the vehicles hit, sustaining significant damage. Fortunately, all passengers escaped unharmed.
The BCT National Highway is strategically important for both civilian and military movement, as it connects to the border areas of the Tawang district. The closure has disrupted supply chains and left travelers stranded, prompting local authorities to issue advisories urging extreme caution on vulnerable stretches. Vehicles traveling from Tawang to Tezpur have been forced to turn back due to the inaccessibility of the highway.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has mobilized manpower and machinery to clear the debris and restore connectivity. Restoration work is underway and is expected to continue overnight. According to one official, traffic movement is expected to resume by Tuesday. The BRO is working to ensure the safe and swift reopening of the highway.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of widespread rainfall and thunderstorms in Arunachal Pradesh until August 28, raising concerns about further disruptions. Anini and Yingkiong have been placed under a yellow alert with a forecast of overcast skies and light rain.
Residents have expressed concerns about the recurring landslide threats along the BCT Highway, citing inadequate maintenance and the lack of early warning systems. They point out that the BCT Highway is considered a lifeline for Tawang, and similar blockages have occurred in past monsoon seasons. This incident highlights the urgent need for long-term infrastructure planning and road safety solutions in Arunachal Pradesh's fragile terrain.
Similar incidents have been reported in neighboring states. A landslide blocked NH-2 in Nagaland, stranding vehicles. In Himachal Pradesh, the Mandi-Kullu highway was blocked near Pandoh Dam after a massive landslide.
The Anjaw district in Arunachal Pradesh has also experienced road closures due to landslides, causing resentment among commuters. Frequent and unannounced closures have left locals and tourists stranded for hours without food and medical facilities. This vital road is essential for residents, security forces, and access to tourism sites along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
