The already horrific Noida dowry death case has taken a new turn with accusations from the estranged daughter-in-law of Nikki Bhati's family, who alleges she, too, was subjected to dowry torture. Nikki Bhati was allegedly murdered by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands.
Minakshi, the estranged wife of Nikki's brother Rohit Payla, has come forward with claims of harassment by her in-laws. Minakshi, 31, who hails from Palla village, married Rohit in 2016. She alleges that her family provided a Maruti Suzuki Ciaz as dowry, which her in-laws later sold, deeming it "inauspicious". Following this, the Payla family allegedly demanded a new Scorpio SUV and cash.
This revelation adds another layer of complexity to the already disturbing case, suggesting a pattern of dowry-related abuse within the family. Nikki's sister, Kanchan, who is married to Vipin's brother Rohit, has also alleged that the family demanded ₹36 lakh more in dowry after an initial Scorpio car and other valuables were given at the time of the marriage. Kanchan stated the harassment continued, and she was also beaten when she tried to intervene.
Nikki's death occurred on Thursday night in Sirsa village, Greater Noida, where she was allegedly beaten, doused with a flammable substance, and set on fire by her husband, Vipin, in front of her sister and son. She was declared dead while being transferred to a hospital in Delhi. A murder case has been registered at Kasna police station, naming Vipin, his brother Rohit, and their parents, Daya and Satveer. Vipin has been arrested, and authorities are searching for the remaining accused.
The victim's father, Bhikari Singh Payla, has expressed his grief and outrage, demanding the harshest punishment for the accused. He recounted how the family had already given a Scorpio and a Bullet motorcycle but the in-laws continued to torture his daughter and later demanded a Mercedes. He has threatened a hunger strike if all the accused are not arrested and if the government does not take action against his son-in-law's house.
Adding to the horror, Nikki's six-year-old son witnessed the attack and described the events to the police. Videos have surfaced showing Nikki being dragged by her hair and another capturing her injured and partially burned.
Nikki's brother, Atul Payla, stated that the family was aware of the abuse and had tried to resolve the issue earlier. Nikki's aunt revealed that the trouble began after Nikki and Kanchan started earning money from their beauty parlor, with Vipin demanding Nikki hand over all her earnings to his mother.
This case has drawn widespread condemnation and sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws against dowry. It also highlights the social pressures and expectations that perpetuate this harmful practice. The police are continuing their investigation, and further details are expected to emerge as the remaining accused are apprehended.
