Canada has appointed Christopher Cooter as its new High Commissioner to India, signaling a step towards mending strained diplomatic relations between the two nations. India has also appointed Dinesh K. Patnaik as its next High Commissioner to Canada. Patnaik, a senior diplomat from the 1990 batch of the Indian Foreign Service, is currently serving as the Indian Ambassador to Spain. He is expected to take up his assignment in Ottawa shortly.

The relationship between Canada and India experienced a significant downturn following Trudeau's allegations in September 2023. These accusations led to a series of diplomatic expulsions and strained ties. India dismissed the claims and accused Canada of providing a safe haven for Sikh separatists.

Despite the recent challenges, there have been signs of improvement in relations. Current Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to reinstate senior diplomats during their first bilateral meeting in Canada in June.

Canada views India as an important partner in various areas. India is Canada's top source of temporary foreign workers and international students, and a significant market for Canadian pulses. Prime Minister Carney has emphasized the importance of diversifying trade and expanding relations with countries beyond the United States.

Anita Anand's appointment as Canada's Foreign Minister is also seen as a positive step towards strengthening India-Canada relations. Experts believe that her strong track record and commitment to the relationship could boost diplomacy between the two countries.
