In Jammu and Kashmir, recent extreme weather events have resulted in significant loss of life and widespread damage. A landslide in Reasi district and a cloudburst in Ramban district have contributed to a grim situation in the region.

Landslide in Reasi

A devastating landslide struck the route to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Reasi district. Initial reports indicated that at least 30 pilgrims died in the landslide near Adhkuwari, with approximately 14 others injured. However, the death toll has since risen to 34, including 20 women, making it one of the most devastating tragedies in recent years. Many of the victims were pilgrims from outside Jammu and Kashmir, hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Mumbai. Rescue operations were launched immediately, involving teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and civil government agencies. The pilgrimage to the shrine was suspended following the incident, and Shrine Board authorities stated that it would remain so until safety assessments could be conducted.

In response to the tragedy, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha ordered a high-level probe. A three-member committee, headed by Additional Chief Secretary Shaleen Kabra, has been formed to investigate the causes of the landslide, assess the effectiveness of the rescue and relief measures, and recommend steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The committee is expected to submit its report within two weeks. Authorities have announced financial assistance of ₹9 lakh per deceased pilgrim, with additional aid from the J&K Disaster Department and the Chief Minister's Fund.

Cloudburst in Ramban

In a separate incident, a cloudburst hit the Rajgarh tehsil of Ramban district. The cloudburst triggered flash floods in the mountainous region, resulting in casualties and damage to property. As of August 30, 2025, officials confirmed that three people had died, including two women, and five others were still missing. Rescue teams were dispatched to the affected area to search for the missing individuals and provide assistance to the victims. Temporary relief camps have been established to provide shelter, food, water, and basic medical care to displaced families.

Broader Impact and Response

These incidents are part of a larger pattern of extreme weather events affecting Jammu and Kashmir. Heavy rains, flash floods, and landslides have caused widespread destruction, damaging homes, infrastructure, and disrupting communication and transportation networks. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been repeatedly blocked due to landslides and mudslides, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued warnings of heavy rainfall in the region. The administration has appealed to residents to remain vigilant and has mobilized resources to provide relief and rescue assistance.
