A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, on Sunday, August 31, 2025, for allegedly making "objectionable" remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The case was registered at the Mana police station based on a complaint filed by a local resident on Saturday.
The FIR was registered under sections 196 (promoting enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc.) and 197 (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The controversy arose after Moitra allegedly stated that if Amit Shah fails to stop infiltration from Bangladesh, "the first thing you should do is cut Amit Shah's head and put it on your table". These remarks were reportedly made while she was speaking to reporters in West Bengal's Nadia district during an event on Thursday. While PTI was unable to independently verify the authenticity of the video containing the statement, it has circulated widely on social media.
According to a police official, the complainant, Gopal Samanto, claimed that Moitra's remarks were objectionable and unconstitutional. The complaint also stated that a significant number of Bangladeshi refugees were settled in the Mana Camp area in Raipur in 1971, and Moitra's statement has created fear among them, as such remarks may provoke anger from other communities against them.
Moitra has alleged that the Union government was shirking its responsibilities regarding border security.
The remarks have been met with strong criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has condemned the statement, calling it "highly irresponsible" and demanding strict legal action. Former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also criticized Moitra, stating that such language against a constitutional authority was unacceptable in a democracy and sets a dangerous precedent for political discourse.
The TMC has yet to issue an official response on the matter. Political observers suggest that this issue could further intensify the ongoing conflict between the BJP and the TMC, particularly as both parties prepare for upcoming elections in several states. This controversy highlights the increasing tension in political discourse, where strong rhetoric can lead to legal and political battles.
