The relationship between India and China hinges significantly on the state of their border, with India emphasizing that peace and tranquility in the border regions are paramount for a healthy bilateral relationship. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed this message to Chinese President Xi Jinping during their recent talks on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin.
During the meeting, both leaders engaged in wide-ranging discussions focused on the long-term growth of their relationship and regional stability. A key aspect of Modi's message was that maintaining peace along the border serves as an "insurance policy" for the overall India-China ties. This underscores India's stance that a stable and peaceful border is a prerequisite for progress in other areas of the relationship. The talks aimed to rebuild bilateral relations after a period of strain following a border standoff in eastern Ladakh that concluded in October of the previous year.
In addition to border issues, Modi raised the challenge of cross-border terrorism, an issue impacting both India and China. He emphasized the need for mutual understanding and cooperation in combating this menace and sought China's support in this regard. According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, China has shown understanding and cooperation regarding India's concerns about cross-border terrorism within the context of the SCO summit.
President Xi Jinping offered several suggestions to further improve bilateral relations. These included strengthening strategic communication and deepening mutual trust, expanding exchanges and cooperation for mutual benefit, accommodating each other's concerns, and strengthening multilateral cooperation to safeguard common interests. Modi responded positively to these suggestions.
Both leaders concurred that a stable and amicable India-China relationship could greatly benefit the 2.8 billion people in the two countries. They also agreed on the importance of preventing differences from escalating into disputes. Modi stressed that border peace is essential for the continued development of their ties. The discussions reflect a mutual desire to guide the future of India-China relations in a positive direction.
