Director AR Murugadoss, known for his action films addressing social issues, recently revealed that he once planned a unique project with Thalapathy Vijay, a departure from their previous collaborations. Murugadoss, currently anticipating the release of his film Madharaasi starring Sivakarthikeyan, shared details of this unmaterialized venture in an interview with Gobinath for Behindwoods.
Following the success of Thuppakki and Kaththi, Murugadoss and Vijay were exploring ideas for their next film. Murugadoss proposed a "dry action" film, a road-trip movie centered around a Sri Lankan Tamil refugee. The story involved the protagonist seeking refuge in India before journeying to Thailand, where he encounters new challenges. His travels would then take him to Canada and finally to London.
The director envisioned a film with intense action but without elaborate fight sequences. The character would be simple, wearing only a lungi and shirt throughout his journey. Vijay was reportedly enthusiastic about the concept, and Murugadoss began developing the story. However, the project didn't take off as planned. According to Murugadoss, people around Vijay advised against it.
Ultimately, Vijay suggested a political film, reminiscent of Murugadoss's earlier film Ramana with Vijayakanth. This suggestion paved the way for Sarkar, their political thriller which was produced by Sun Pictures.
While this "dry action" film never materialized, it offers a glimpse into the creative discussions between Murugadoss and Vijay. The director is known for films such as Ghajini and 7 Aum Arivu. He has a Filmfare Award for Best Director for Kaththi.
Meanwhile, Thalapathy Vijay has completed filming for Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth. The film is described as a political action drama, where Vijay plays a former police officer. Jana Nayagan is slated for release on January 9, 2026, coinciding with the Pongal festival. There is speculation that this may be Vijay's last film before he pursues a full-time career in politics. The film features Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol, as well as Mamitha Baiju, Priyamani, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Narain.
