Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a review of the relief efforts in flood and landslide-affected areas of the Jammu division on Monday, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive strategy to mitigate the impact of natural calamities in the region. Shah, accompanied by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, assessed the damage caused by the recent heavy rains and floods, assuring the people of Jammu and Kashmir of the Modi government's full support.

During his visit, Shah met with flood-affected families in Chak Mangu village and inspected several damaged sites, including the Tawi Bridge at Bikram Chowk, a Shiv temple, and nearby homes. Expressing his condolences for the loss of lives, he affirmed the central government's commitment to providing immediate relief, financial assistance, and technical support for recovery and reconstruction.

A key focus of Shah's review was the strengthening of early warning systems for natural disasters. He directed the Meteorological Department and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to conduct a joint study to decode cloudburst patterns using data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative aims to improve the accuracy of forecasting and develop a more effective early warning system to minimize casualties in the future. Shah also called for a critical review of the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert mechanism to enhance its effectiveness and reach at the grassroots level.

Shah announced that advanced survey teams from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) would be deployed to assess the full extent of the damage. He also stated that the government has already released ₹209 crore to J&K under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to facilitate relief operations. Furthermore, he directed the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to ensure an adequate supply of rations, with a decision on offline delivery to be taken based on connectivity assessments in the coming days.

The Home Minister commended the coordinated efforts of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Army, the Air Force, the UT Disaster Response Force (UTDRF), the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and the J&K Police in minimizing casualties. He noted that over 5,000 people had been safely evacuated, and efforts were underway to restore essential services. According to Shah, over 80% of the power supply has been restored, and relief camps are providing adequate health and food facilities.

Shah also addressed the issue of damaged private properties, assuring that assistance under the SDRF would be assessed and disbursed as quickly as possible. He acknowledged the damage to roads and other infrastructure, stating that repair and restoration work has commenced, and traffic movement has resumed on most roads. Drinking water supplies and health services have also been restored in many areas.
