In a horrifying incident that underscores the grim reality of colorism and domestic violence in India, a man in Rajasthan has been sentenced to death for burning his wife alive. The crime occurred on June 24, 2017, in Navaniya village, within the limits of Vallabhnagar police station. Kishanlal, the accused, harbored deep-seated prejudices against his wife Laxmi due to her dark complexion and weight. On the fateful night, Kishanlal deceptively told Laxmi that he had brought a "medicine" that would make her fairer. He then applied a foul-smelling chemical, later identified as an inflammable substance, all over her body. Despite Laxmi's complaints about the acidic smell, Kishanlal dismissed her concerns and proceeded to set her ablaze using an incense stick.

As Laxmi screamed in agony, her in-laws rushed to the scene and attempted to extinguish the flames. Severely burned, she was rushed to a city hospital where she gave a dying declaration, identifying her husband as the perpetrator. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries a few days later.

During the trial, Public Prosecutor Dinesh Paliwal presented substantial evidence, including 14 witnesses and 36 documents, to build a strong case against Kishanlal. The evidence included Laxmi's dying declaration, medical reports, and FSL reports. The court found the prosecution's case airtight, leading to Kishanlal's conviction.

Presiding Judge Rahul Chaudhary condemned the act as "not just against Laxmi but against humanity itself".
