The Indian Air Force (IAF) is expected to induct the first two Tejas Mk1A Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) in October 2025, marking a significant milestone in India's indigenous fighter jet program. These deliveries come after successful completion of weapons integration trials, including the firing of Astra and ASRAM missiles, enhancing the aircraft's combat capabilities.

Delivery Timeline and Production Status

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is set to deliver the initial two Tejas Mk-1A aircraft to the IAF in October. Despite some delays in engine deliveries from the United States, HAL has maintained production momentum. According to sources, ten aircraft have already been built and tested, with one aircraft from Nashik ready for handover.

While the initial order of 83 Mk-1A fighters is now expected to be completed by 2029, a delay of four quarters from the original schedule, the more advanced LCA Mk2 is still slated for rollout in 2027. HAL is also upgrading 15 Su-30MKI fighters for the IAF, further solidifying its role in India's defense aerospace sector.

Engine Supply and Contractual Agreements

HAL has faced some challenges in acquiring GE F404 engines from the US. However, two additional engines are expected to arrive this month to support the production line. In addition to the F404 engines, ten F414 engines have already been delivered. A broader deal for 113 F404 engines, intended for powering an additional 97 Tejas Mk-1A fighters, has been finalized, with the contract signing expected soon. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has already cleared the deal.

Weapons Integration and Final Testing

The Tejas Mk-1A has successfully completed weapons integration trials, including the firing of the Astra beyond-visual-range missile and the ASRAM short-range missile. These advancements significantly enhance the aircraft's combat capabilities. Before the handover to the IAF, the Tejas Mark-1A will undergo final tests involving the firing of Astra missiles, laser-guided bombs, and Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missiles (ASRAAM) to validate all parameters.

Significance and Future Prospects

The induction of the Tejas Mk1A is a significant step towards self-reliance in defense manufacturing and a major boost to the IAF's modernization efforts. The Tejas Mk-1A is designed to replace the IAF's aging MiG-21 fleet and serve as a primary workhorse alongside heavier platforms like the Sukhoi Su-30MKI.

The government has approved an additional batch of 97 Tejas fighters at a cost of around ₹67,000 crore. This commitment, combined with the previous order for 83 aircraft, makes the Tejas program the IAF's largest indigenous defense aviation project. Over 65% of the Tejas components are sourced domestically, involving hundreds of small and medium enterprises, thereby boosting the Indian MSME ecosystem.
