The Meghalaya Police have filed a 790-page chargesheet in connection with the murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was killed during his honeymoon in Sohra in May. The chargesheet names five individuals, including Raghuvanshi's wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, and three hitmen: Akash Singh Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi. The chargesheet was submitted to the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Sohra Sub-Division.
According to the police investigation, Sonam Raghuvanshi was in a relationship with Raj Kushwaha, and the two conspired to murder Raja Raghuvanshi under the guise of a honeymoon. Raja and Sonam traveled to Shillong on May 21, 2025, and later to Sohra. They were reported missing on May 26, and Raja's body was discovered on June 2 in a deep gorge near the Weisawdong Falls.
The accused have been charged under sections 103(1) for murder, 238(a) for the disappearance of evidence, and 61(2) for criminal conspiracy, according to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Vipin Raghuvanshi, the elder brother of Raja Raghuvanshi, has expressed his family's demand for the death penalty for Sonam and all other accused involved in the murder. He stated that the family is satisfied with the police investigation and believes that the charges against the accused are strong. He told news agency PTI in Indore, "My family has only one demand, that is, along with Sonam and Kushwaha, all the accused be sentenced to death".
The Meghalaya Police have also arrested three additional individuals—Lokendra Tomar, Balla Ahirwar, and Silome James—for allegedly destroying evidence related to the case. These individuals were apprehended in different parts of Madhya Pradesh. A supplementary chargesheet will be filed against them pending additional forensic reports.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem stated that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has submitted substantial material evidence and enclosures along with the chargesheet. The investigation revealed that the murder was carried out by the three hired assailants in Sonam's presence at the gorge. Within a week of the probe, five accused, including Sonam, were traced to Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
